If you do a 8x8 houses (or 6圆 scholar houses or half and half even) you can fit a central park with the huge water ornament from city lights in the middle, which is very attractive. You can also do an open U-type layout with a park in the open area. My default housing-block is a 9x9 spaces with 8 houses and a 3x3 space in the middle, but I often vary those to 3x4 houses or 3x5, 4x4 etc. You may fill them or leave them empty as you please. The decorative DLC also bring nice content that fit well there, like the playgrounds. Now this layout is designed to wor up to tier 3, so in the beginning there are obviously gonna be some gaps. (Obviously it is not as space efficient though.) Some of the parks and ornaments can go in between the houses (I still build dedicated park areas, but not as many). But constructing a thriving industrial metropolis requires players to. I like my layouts to have a free space between the buildings in the middle (especially for engineer/investor tier), looks more attractive and realistic as well compared to the classic space efficient 2-row-layout you got here, I think.
